Italy’s T20 World Cup dream takes flight
New Delhi
Italy’s cricket team has made history by qualifying for the 2026 T20 World Cup, and captain Joe Burns says it’s all thanks to strong planning and teamwork. Burns, originally from Australia but playing for Italy due to his family roots, described the moment as “surreal.”
Speaking to ICC Digital, Burns said the team worked hard with training camps in Rome and the UK. “From day one, I told them, ‘I want us to be the most prepared team in world cricket,’” he shared.
Italy’s big wins in the European qualifiers, including an upset against Scotland, showed their smart tactics. Even in a loss to the Netherlands, Burns changed plans mid-game to help the team qualify.
Players like Crishan Kalugamage and Ben Manenti played key roles, while coach John Davidson and his staff, including Dougie Brown and Kevin O’Brien, gave expert guidance.
Burns praised their efforts, saying, “These guys know what it takes in Associate cricket.” Looking ahead, he’s excited to face strong teams like India and Sri Lanka next year.
