Australia's Glenn Maxwell has retired from One Day Internationals (ODIs) to focus on the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup and other global T20 leagues. Maxwell ends his ODI career with 3,990 runs and 77 wickets from 149 matches since debuting in 2012.

He was part of Australia’s World Cup-winning teams in 2015 and 2023. His final ODI came against India earlier this year. Maxwell said his body couldn't keep up with ODI demands, and stepping aside helps Australia plan for future tournaments.

One of his most memorable performances came in the 2023 World Cup, where he scored an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan despite severe cramps. That innings is considered one of the best in ODI history.

Maxwell explained on the Final Word Podcast that holding his spot without consistent performance would be selfish. He wanted others to get enough chances ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Australia's Chief Selector George Bailey praised Maxwell for his unique skill, passion, and major contributions. He added that Maxwell remains key to Australia’s T20 plans.

Maxwell, who recently missed IPL 2025 due to a broken finger, is expected to return for Major League Cricket in the U.S. soon. He’s also likely to play in Australia’s T20I series in the Caribbean starting July 20.
