ECB drops data analysts; McCullum trusts intuition.
London
Ahead of the upcoming five-match Test series against India starting June 20, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has parted ways with senior data analysts Nathan Leamon and Freddie Wilde. Head coach Brendon McCullum plans to rely more on intuition and gut feeling rather than heavy data analysis for the new World Test Championship cycle.
According to reports, McCullum views detailed data analysis as better suited for the shorter T20 format and franchise cricket, where player weaknesses are more exploitable. He believes the international Test game requires players to trust their instincts more and take greater responsibility for their own preparation.
The move also reduces the number of support staff in the dressing room, creating a less cluttered, more straightforward environment for the players.
This approach contrasts with India’s cricket setup, where data analytics under Rahul Dravid had grown significantly.
While players can still consult analysts if they wish, the ECB management prefers that instinct guides most decisions in Tests. This shift signals a more traditional, gut-led strategy for England as they face a strong and evolving Indian team.
