Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Wednesday has expressed confidence that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah could soon take over the Test captaincy. Gavaskar praised Bumrah’s leadership qualities, noting his calm approach and ability to lead by example without exerting pressure on his teammates.

Bumrah, who captained India in two matches during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, impressed Gavaskar with his leadership style. “He leads from the front with a great attitude and expects players to do their jobs without putting undue pressure on them,” Gavaskar said. “I won’t be surprised if he takes over as captain very soon.”

Despite India’s 3-1 defeat in the series, Bumrah’s performance was exceptional. He claimed 32 wickets in five matches, earning the Player of the Series award for his efforts. Gavaskar reflected on India’s defeat in Sydney, where Bumrah missed the final innings due to a back spasm, suggesting his absence could have impacted the result.

Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting also highlighted Bumrah’s unique challenges for batters, noting that even players like Steve Smith struggle with his visual cues. Ponting added that Bumrah’s potential as a Test captain is undeniable, echoing the success of other fast bowlers, like Pat Cummins, leading their teams in the longest format.
