A transfer row has erupted between Athletic Club and FC Barcelona over the latter’s renewed attempt to sign Spain international winger Nico Williams. This marks the second consecutive summer Barcelona has pursued the 21-year-old, but with Athletic refusing to negotiate, Barça’s only option is to trigger the player’s €58 million (approx. $68 million) release clause.

However, Barcelona’s financial struggles under La Liga’s strict fair play regulations complicate any potential deal. The club recently needed clearance from Spain’s Superior Sports Committee just to register Dani Olmo, and questions remain over whether new signings can be registered without offloading existing players.

Tensions escalated after Barcelona sporting director Deco publicly stated that Williams expressed a desire to join Barcelona. Athletic reacted strongly, filing a request with La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to investigate Barcelona’s financial standing. Barça president Joan Laporta hit back, urging Athletic to “mind its business.” In response, Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte met with La Liga chief Javier Tebas to discuss the situation, including Barça’s ability to sign players.

Athletic reiterated that Williams remains under contract until June 30, 2027, and emphasized their duty to defend the club’s interests and ensure league rules are upheld. They also highlighted Laporta’s own admission that Barcelona is still trying to meet the 1:1 financial regulation. Despite media claims that Williams could sign next week, the dispute is far from settled and may dominate headlines throughout the summer transfer window.
