The demand for mandatory fare meters in auto rickshaws remains unmet, allowing operators to continue overcharging passengers. Despite past efforts by the district administration and a two-month deadline issued by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan, no action was taken. Residents continue to urge authorities to regulate fares.

According to an estimate, there are more than 14,000 auto rickshaws in city. In terms of transportation, the RTO ensures that almost all autos are equipped with meters while issuing permits, but none of the drivers are using them. People coming to city from neighbouring towns are worried about travelling by auto in the city. Auto drivers sometimes charge 100 rupees for a kilometre or two. Long-distance travellers are shocked at the price list here.

The committee, comprising Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan, Police Commissioner Iada Martin Marbaniang and RTO Nagesh Mundas held two meetings recently to try to fix the auto fare. However, this attempt was not successful. Deputy Commissioner Roshan gave a deadline of two months to auto rickshaw owners to install meters. However, despite the deadline passing a month ago, no steps have been taken.

Nagesh Mundas, Regional Transport Officer, said that two rounds of meetings were already held with the officials of the departments concerned and discussions were held. Another meeting will be held, and a final decision will be taken in this regard, he added.

Mansur Honegekar, President of Autorickshaw Drivers' Association, said that there is no minimum rate set per km of auto travel. The rate set in this regard is very old, which needs to be revised. Arrangements should be made for the repair of the meter, and steps should be taken to implement auto meters. However, there are no meter repairers in city.
