Aus on brink of third ICC Women’s title
Wellington
Australia is just one step away from clinching their third straight ICC Women’s Championship title after a commanding 65-run win (via DLS method) against New Zealand in the second ODI on Saturday.
The victory propelled Australia to 37 points in the standings, leaving only India with a theoretical chance of overtaking them. For this to happen, India must win all six of their remaining matches—three against West Indies and three against Ireland—and depend on New Zealand to defeat Australia in the final ODI.
Annabel Sutherland delivered an extraordinary performance, smashing 105 runs off 81 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes. Captain Alyssa Healy (34), Tahlia McGrath (34), and Ellyse Perry (29) added crucial runs, bringing Australia's total to an imposing 291/7. Despite Molly Penfold’s career-best figures of 4/42 for New Zealand, her efforts weren’t enough.
New Zealand’s chase faltered early, with Kim Garth dismissing both openers. Amelia Kerr fought back with a composed 38, but rain interrupted the game with New Zealand at 122/5, short of the DLS-par score.
“We are thrilled to be so close to another title,” said Annabel Sutherland. “The team’s hard work is paying off, and we are excited for the final match.”
Australia now leads the three-match series 1-0, with the final game set for Monday. A win or tie in the decider would seal Australia’s dominance, reaffirming their position as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
