Manchester United sealed a dramatic 7-6 aggregate win over Lyon to reach the Europa League semi-finals. Manager Ruben Amorim revealed he drew inspiration from United’s famous 1999 Champions League comeback. Back then, United scored twice in injury time to beat Bayern Munich and complete a historic treble.

United’s quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford became the first nine-goal game in Europa League history. Despite leading by two goals, United saw ten-man Lyon bounce back to lead 3-2. But late goals in extra time by Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire turned the match around, with United winning 5-4 on the night.

“I watched the 1999 final documentary again for inspiration,” Amorim said. “At 4-2, you think it’s over—but here, it’s never over.”

He credited Maguire’s aerial strength and Mainoo’s smart movement for their crucial goals. “Kobbie lacks pace after injury, but in tight spaces, he’s brilliant. We tried it, and today it worked,” Amorim added.

Looking ahead to the semi-final clash against Athletic Club in May, Amorim stressed belief and determination. “We’re not always perfect, but character matters. That’s what we showed today. Reaching the semi-finals is a boost, but we haven’t won anything yet.”

United’s dream of European silverware continues, driven by history and heart.
