The Threats of Deep fake Technology
1. Misinformation and Fake News
Deepfakes are becoming a powerful weapon for spreading misinformation. In India, while there are no direct laws governing deepfakes, sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and Indian Penal Code (IPC) are being applied to deal with specific cases, such as cyber defamation and impersonation. However, experts suggest that India needs dedicated laws to effectively address the rising threat.
The Way Forward: What Needs to Be Done

Countries need comprehensive laws that specifically address the creation, distribution, and malicious use of deepfake technology. Laws must differentiate between harmful deepfakes and legitimate uses like parody and art.
