India now boasts over 73,000 startups with at least one woman director, according to the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. This makes up nearly half of the country’s total 1,57,066 government-supported startups, highlighting the vital role women play in driving innovation and economic progress.

India has become the third-largest startup hub globally, home to over 100 unicorns, and is rapidly shaping the future of entrepreneurship. Key cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi-NCR are emerging as innovation centres, fueled by affordable internet and a young workforce. Startups are thriving across various sectors including fintech, edtech, health-tech, and e-commerce.

Technologies such as AI, blockchain, and IoT are being harnessed to address both local and global issues. A supportive ecosystem of incubators, accelerators, and mentors is helping to bridge grassroots challenges with innovative solutions.

The Indian government has been instrumental in fostering this growth through initiatives like Startup India, launched in 2016. As of December 2024, more than 157,000 startups are recognized under the program. The government offers a range of support, including ease of business regulations, tax benefits, and funding schemes. Programs like SAMRIDH, AIM, and NIDHI provide crucial infrastructure and financial backing.

Notable successes such as BYJU’S, Zomato, and Nykaa are expanding globally, while Indian-origin startups thrive in Silicon Valley, showing India's growing global influence. India’s leadership in affordable technology solutions, like UPI and Aadhaar, is also inspiring global innovations, cementing the country’s position as a startup powerhouse.
