Waqf Amendment Bill approved amid oppn protest
New Delhi
A parliamentary panel has approved the Waqf Amendment Bill, with BJP members supporting changes, leading to opposition criticism. The Joint Committee of Parliament (JPC) adopted the report by a 15-11 majority vote, with opposition members expressing dissent.
BJP members argue the bill aims to improve transparency and accountability in Waqf property management, while the opposition views it as an infringement on Muslim rights. A key concern is the inclusion of non-Muslims on Waqf boards, which opposition claims violates constitutional rights. Amendments approved include broader representation on state Waqf boards and provisions for women’s inheritance rights. The bill will be tabled in Parliament during the Budget session.
