Vice President election to be held on September 9
New Delhi
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that voting for the next Vice President of India will take place on September 9. The announcement was made on Friday after a formal notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs issued on July 22.
This election will fill the vacancy in the Vice President’s office. The newly elected Vice President will serve a five-year term starting from the date they assume office.
According to the ECI's schedule, the notification for the election will be issued on August 7. Candidates can file nominations until August 21. Scrutiny of nominations will be done on August 22, and candidates can withdraw their names by August 25. If voting is required, it will happen on September 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The counting of votes, if needed, will take place on the same day.
The Vice President is elected by an electoral college made up of Members of Parliament from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. This year, there are 782 eligible voters — 543 from Lok Sabha (one seat vacant) and 239 from Rajya Sabha (five seats vacant, including 12 nominated members).
The voting will be held in Parliament House, Room No. F-101, Vasudha, First Floor. The process will be done using a secret ballot with a proportional representation system and a single transferable vote.
The Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha has been appointed as the Returning Officer. As per constitutional rules, secrecy is mandatory. Members cannot show their ballot to anyone, and open voting is strictly forbidden.
