UP launches plan to protect rhinos, endangered wildlife.
Lucknow
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh’s Forest and Wildlife Department has launched a major initiative to protect the natural habitats of rhinos and other endangered species. As part of the project, two new Rhino Rehabilitation Centres (RRCs) will be set up in Dudhwa National Park, Lakhimpur, with an approved budget of ₹1.5 crore.
The initiative focuses on long-term habitat conservation, anti-poaching efforts, staff training, public awareness, and medical care for wildlife. It forms part of a broader conservation project in the Terai region, with Dudhwa National Park at its core.
Deputy Director Rangaraju stated that the upcoming RRC-3 and RRC-4 will be modelled on the existing RRC-1 and RRC-2. These centres will offer open forest enclosures under close monitoring, allowing rhinos to live in natural surroundings while maintaining their instincts. They will also support other endangered species in the region.
Of the allocated funds, ₹1.27 crore will go towards maintaining habitats, including water sources and vegetation. Additionally, ₹7 lakh is set aside for veterinary supplies, ₹4.8 lakh for major construction, ₹3 lakh for minor infrastructure, and another ₹7 lakh for monitoring tools and equipment.
The plan includes strengthening anti-poaching efforts and curbing illegal wildlife trade. Local communities will be engaged through training programs to raise awareness about conservation.
This initiative is expected to not only boost rhino numbers in Uttar Pradesh but also enrich the biodiversity of the Dudhwa ecosystem.
