In response to rising violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, the All Tripura Hotel and Restaurant Owners' Association (ATHROA) has decided to deny services to Bangladeshi citizens. The ban, which started on December 2, 2024, applies to all hotels and restaurants in the state. Bhaskar Chakraborty, the association’s office secretary, explained that the decision was made following concerns over the growing unrest in Bangladesh and the disrespect shown towards India's national flag. Chakraborty added that the decision was also influenced by recent incidents involving the Bangladesh High Commission, as well as concerns over the safety of Bangladeshi nationals visiting Tripura. The association clarified that guests who had checked in before December 2 can stay, but no new bookings will be accepted. Exceptions will be made for critical medical cases with proper documentation. ATHROA's official statement condemned the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh, emphasizing that while India is a secular country that respects all religions, the ongoing violence against minorities in Bangladesh is deeply troubling. The association also highlighted Tripura's history of hospitality towards Bangladeshis but noted that the current situation has led to this difficult stance. The move has drawn mixed reactions, with some supporting it as a stand against discrimination, while others question its potential impact on tourism and business relations between the two nations. The ban will remain in effect until further notice.
