In the aftermath of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that 97 individuals have been arrested across the state for allegedly spreading anti-national and anti-Hindu content online. Taking to social media platform X on Monday, CM Sarma stated, “Crackdown on anti-Hindu elements continues… 97 anti-national and anti-Hindu culprits behind bars now.” He mentioned that among the latest arrests, two individuals were taken into custody from Tinsukia and Nagaon districts.

According to Sarma, Md Anisur Rehman was arrested by Tinsukia Police for allegedly sharing objectionable content about Hinduism on social media. Similarly, Farijul Islam was detained by Nagaon Police for posting derogatory remarks against Lord Ram. This is part of a broader clampdown by the Assam government on individuals accused of supporting or justifying terrorism following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives—mostly tourists—and injured several others.

Earlier, AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam was arrested on sedition charges for allegedly defending Pakistan’s role in the Pahalgam incident. Although he was later granted bail, Islam was re-detained under the National Security Act (NSA). CM Sarma had previously made headlines for his strong stance, warning that anyone chanting “Pakistan Zindabad” in Assam would face severe consequences.

The ongoing arrests reflect the state’s zero-tolerance approach toward any perceived anti-national or religiously offensive activity, especially in the wake of rising tensions following the terror attack.
