Strong earthquake jolts Delhi, NCR region
New Delhi
Strong tremors were felt across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday morning after an earthquake struck with a magnitude that caused panic among residents. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was recorded at 9:04 AM at a shallow depth of 10 km.
Apart from the national capital, tremors were reported in Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad, as well as parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The sudden jolt caused panic, forcing people to rush out of buildings. On social media, users shared their experiences, with many describing the quake as intense. Some reported cupboards swinging open and parked vehicles shaking due to the tremors.
“We felt the tremors… it was really scary, my vehicle shook violently,” an eyewitness told ANI. Another person in Ghaziabad described it as if someone was “shaking the entire shop.” This isn’t the first time the region has experienced seismic activity. On February 17, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter in Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan, was felt across the NCR.
According to NCS data, the Delhi region has experienced 446 earthquakes between 1993 and 2025 within a 50 sq km radius of Dhaula Kuan, with magnitudes ranging from 1.1 to 4.6. These frequent tremors underline the region’s vulnerability to seismic events and raise questions about disaster preparedness in urban zones. Authorities have advised citizens to stay alert and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
