RJD's Waqf Act remark ignites political row
A major political row has erupted after RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav’s fiery remarks at the Save Waqf, Save Constitution rally in Patna. While addressing the crowd, the former Bihar Deputy CM said the Waqf Amendment Act would be scrapped if the Mahagathbandhan (RJD-Congress-Left) returns to power, calling the law black and pledging to throw it in the dustbin.
The BJP strongly criticised the statement, accusing the Opposition of using religion to secure minority votes ahead of elections. BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed the RJD-Congress-Left bloc was trying to inject Sharia-like elements into the Constitution and labelled the remarks as desperate vote bank politics.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh mocked Tejashwi, saying he had shifted from being a socialist to a namaazwadi. JD(U) leader Ashok Choudhary also hit out, questioning RJD's past record on minority welfare, asking what it had delivered during its 15 years in power.
In response, RJD and its allies accused the BJP of twisting the issue into a Hindu-Muslim debate to spread fear and hate. RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari said the BJP was rattled by growing opposition and was trying to polarize voters.
Congress leader Pawan Khera added that the Opposition had opposed the Waqf amendments in Parliament, but the government forced it through. Meanwhile, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi accused Opposition leaders of exploiting religious fears before elections for political gain.
