RBI to issue new ₹100 and ₹200 banknotes with Gov. Sanjay Malhotra’s sign
Mumbai
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Tuesday that it will soon release ₹100 and ₹200 banknotes featuring the signature of its new Governor, Sanjay Malhotra. In an official statement, the RBI confirmed that these new banknotes will be part of the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series and will retain the same design as existing ₹100 and ₹200 notes.
“The design of these notes is similar in all respects to the existing ₹100 and ₹200 banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series,” the statement read. The central bank also reassured the public that all previously issued ₹100 and ₹200 banknotes will remain legal tender. There is no change in their validity, and they will continue to be accepted for transactions. Sanjay Malhotra assumed office as the RBI Governor in December 2024, succeeding Shaktikanta Das, who stepped down after completing his extended term. Malhotra, a seasoned bureaucrat, was formerly the Secretary of the Department of Financial Services.
His tenure at the RBI is expected to focus on monetary policy stability, inflation control, and economic growth. The introduction of new banknotes with the updated signature is a routine process following the appointment of a new RBI Governor. The central bank periodically issues updated currency notes to reflect changes in leadership while ensuring the continuity of existing currency circulation.
