Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, arrived in Jammu on Saturday and proceeded to Poonch to meet families affected by recent Pakistani shelling along the Line of Control (LoC). This marks his second visit to Jammu and Kashmir in recent weeks, following his visit to Srinagar on April 25 to meet victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.

J&K Minister Javed Ahmed Rana welcomed Gandhi, saying, “He’s flying to Poonch to express solidarity with families affected by the recent shelling. We appreciate his commitment during difficult times.” Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed the visit, adding, “Rahul Gandhi will meet the affected people and offer sympathies. It matters that national leaders listen during crises.”

The visit comes amid escalating tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam attack. Pakistani forces launched intense shelling in Poonch and Rajouri, damaging homes and injuring civilians. Pakistan also targeted Indian military stations with drones and missiles. Though a ceasefire understanding was reached on May 10, violations persisted until renewed military talks brought calm.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit highlights political and humanitarian concerns for border residents enduring the impact of cross-border hostilities. It aims to draw national attention to their plight and reassure affected families.

Rahul Gandhi also met local officials and security personnel to discuss ongoing challenges in maintaining peace along the LoC. He urged for increased support and rehabilitation measures for affected families. His visit is seen as a step toward strengthening political focus on border security and humanitarian aid.
