Rahul Gandhi says Trump is right on economy
New Delhi
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday agreed with US President Donald Trump’s recent comment describing the Indian economy as “dead,” saying he was “glad” the US leader had “stated a fact.”
Speaking to reporters, Gandhi said, “Yes, he is right. Everyone knows the Indian economy is dead—except the Prime Minister and Finance Minister. The BJP has destroyed the economy to benefit Adani.”
Trump made the controversial statement on his platform Truth Social, following his announcement of a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports. He also threatened further penalties over India’s purchase of Russian oil and military gear, stating, “India can take its dead economy down with Russia. Their tariffs are among the highest in the world.”
Responding to Trump’s multiple claims, Gandhi questioned PM Modi’s silence. “Trump has claimed he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, said five Indian jets were lost, and now has imposed tariffs. Why hasn’t the PM responded?”
He also targeted External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, accusing the government of failed foreign policy. “America insults us. China threatens us. No country condemned Pakistan for the Pahalgam terror attack. Yet the PM and his ministers act like it’s a victory.”
Gandhi further accused the Modi government of surrendering to American pressure. “This India-US trade deal will go as Trump wants. PM Modi only works for Adani. Our economy, defence and foreign policy are being destroyed.”
The remarks highlight sharp tensions following Trump's tariff decision and increasing criticism of India’s international and economic handling by the Opposition.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Prime Minister Modi for staying silent as Trump made ceasefire claims about India-Pakistan. Kharge said Modi observed a "Maun Vrat" in Parliament instead of responding. He also condemned the US imposing 25% tariffs on India, affecting trade, MSMEs, and farmers. Kharge accused Modi’s government of harming India’s strategic autonomy by relying too much on the US. He reminded that the UPA secured nuclear deals with multiple countries, including the US. Kharge warned of a new America-China-Pakistan alliance and urged Modi to focus on national interests rather than public relations.
