Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted the growing strength of India’s steel industry and its crucial role in driving the country’s infrastructure, defence, electric mobility, and clean energy sectors. He praised Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s statement on how India’s policy support and innovation are helping the nation become a global steel leader.

Kumaraswamy emphasized that the revitalized steel sector is fueling the rise of a new India. Steel is central to major projects like highways, high-speed rail, metro systems, renewable energy parks, electric vehicles, and defence. He noted that under Modi’s leadership, India has become the world’s second-largest steel producer, with production nearly doubling since 2014. The country is on track to reach its 2030 goal of producing 300 million tonnes per year.

The minister highlighted key reforms such as the iron and steel products policy and the Production Linked Incentive scheme, which have boosted capacity, self-reliance, and green steel innovations. Today, India exports quality steel and supports small and medium industries, reflecting the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Kumaraswamy also shared that steel was once a stagnant sector but is now growing rapidly. Steel production has increased from around 81 million tonnes in 2014 to over 152 million tonnes today. This growth makes India unique as the only major economy with rising steel demand, marking steel as the backbone of India’s resilient progress.
