Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Kamla Persad-Bissessar on her victory in the 2025 general elections in Trinidad and Tobago, expressing his eagerness to collaborate in strengthening ties between the two nations for mutual prosperity. Persad-Bissessar, who previously served as Prime Minister from 2010 to 2015, marked a strong comeback with her victory.

In a message on X, PM Modi stated, Heartiest congratulations MPKamla on your election victory. We value our deep ties with Trinidad and Tobago and look forward to working closely with you for the well-being of our people.

On April 28, Persad-Bissessar's United National Congress (UNC) defeated the ruling People's National Movement (PNM) in a decisive election. While vote counting continued, she assured supporters of a strong effort to flip several PNM-held seats. However, she refrained from declaring them official until all votes were counted. The Trinidad and Tobago People's Party (TPP) secured the two Tobago seats.

At the same time, PNM leader Keith Rowley acknowledged defeat, predicting the PNM would enter the opposition with 10 to 12 seats. Reflecting on the loss, Rowley noted that though it was a tough night for his party, the true winner was the people of Trinidad and Tobago. Despite the defeat, he emphasized that the PNM would regroup and begin preparations for the next election.
