The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on Saturday announced significant progress in controlling a gas blowout at its Rudrasagar oil field in Barichuk, Assam. The uncontrolled gas flow, which began on June 12, occurred at well RDS#147A, operated by S K Petro Services on ONGC’s behalf.

In an official statement, ONGC confirmed that the gas flow rate has reduced substantially, marking a major milestone in containment efforts. An expert team from CUDD Pressure Control, USA, who arrived on-site recently, reviewed the ongoing efforts and expressed confidence in ONGC’s strategy and execution.

The company stated that it has begun removing tubulars and mobilizing cranes as part of the next containment phase. Continuous water blanketing and flood-level monitoring of the nearby Dikhow River are being carried out as critical safety measures. Real-time gas detectors are also monitoring air quality to ensure safety at the site.

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri posted on LinkedIn that the well is being blanketed with water to prevent fire, and medical aid is being provided at relief camps. Residents near the site have been relocated. He added that the gas primarily consists of methane, which is dispersing into the air without settling, minimizing risks.

Puri noted that gas pressure has significantly dropped from 2,600 psi to 500 psi. ONGC is currently attempting a “junk shot” operation to plug the well, and if necessary, will proceed with capping the site. The situation continues to be monitored round-the-clock.
