Odisha Police book 5,000 Congress members over protest

Odisha Commissionerate Police have filed cases against nearly 5,000 Congress workers and leaders for their alleged involvement in a violent protest near Gandhi Marg, Bhubaneswar, on March 27. The protest, led by the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), aimed to gherao the state Assembly, demanding action against rising crimes against women under the BJP government. Key Congress figures named include OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das and several current and former MLAs.
According to police, the rally turned violent after inflammatory speeches by leaders. Protesters allegedly pelted stones, eggs, tomatoes, and chairs at police, attempting to break through barricades. The FIR notes that Congress supporters arrived from various parts of the state and gathered for a meeting at Gandhi Marg.
DCP Jagmohan Meena confirmed that three people have been arrested so far and that further action will be taken based on the investigation. He added that the police initially tried to control the crowd with warnings, but had to resort to water cannons and tear gas when the situation escalated.
Over 50 people, including several police personnel, were injured during the clash. Police said the violence was incited by provocative speeches made during the rally. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are reviewing evidence to identify others involved in the violence.
