Heavy rainfall continues to wreak havoc across the Northeast, leaving 30 people dead since May 29. Assam remains among the worst-hit, with eight deaths and over 78,000 people affected across 15 districts. Road and rail connectivity has been severely disrupted.

The Central Water Commission has issued an ‘orange bulletin’ as major rivers including the Brahmaputra and Barak flow above danger levels. In Sikkim, the Teesta River’s level surged due to continuous downpours, prompting a red alert for Mangan and an orange alert for five other districts.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured Chief Ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim of full support, stating that the Modi government stands firmly with the region. Tripura recorded 200 mm of rainfall in just three hours, leading to massive inundation in Agartala. One person died after falling into an open manhole. Over 1,300 families have taken shelter in relief camps.

Manipur, Mizoram, and Meghalaya also reported casualties and extensive damage. Arunachal Pradesh announced ₹4 lakh ex gratia for victims’ families after nine deaths due to landslides. Relief efforts are underway, with security forces evacuating stranded residents. However, heavy rains are expected to continue, further complicating rescue operations.
