Nine Indian institutions rank among QS world’s top 50

Nine Indian universities and institutions have secured spots in the world’s top 50 in the QS subject-wise rankings, despite some leading institutes, including three IITs, two IIMs, and JNU, witnessing a drop in their ranks.
According to the 15th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, India has achieved 12 top-50 positions across various subjects, with nine institutions contributing to this success.
The Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, leads the rankings for India, securing the 20th spot globally in Engineering-Mineral and Mining. IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur are ranked 28th and 45th in the same category but have seen a decline in their positions.
IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay have improved in Engineering and Technology, moving up to the 26th and 28th spots, respectively. Both institutes also entered the top 50 for Engineering-Electrical and Electronic.
IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore remain in the world’s top 50 for Business and Management Studies but have slipped in rankings, with IIM Ahmedabad dropping to 27 from 22 and IIM Bangalore falling to 40 from 32.
IIT Madras (Petroleum Engineering) and JNU (Development Studies) continue in the top 50 but have also seen slight declines.
QS reported that 79 Indian universities featured 533 times in the rankings, marking a 25.7% increase from last year. India also ranks 12th globally in total entries, reflecting its growing presence in higher education.
