A village sarpanch in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district was removed after she handed over control of the panchayat to another person for money. The sarpanch, Laxmi Bai of Karod gram panchayat, signed an agreement on a Rs 100 stamp paper with local contractor and panchayat member Ranveer Singh Kushwaha in November 2022. Under the deal, Kushwaha agreed to clear Laxmi Bai’s debt of Rs 20 lakh and pay her a 5% commission on construction contracts he received. After the agreement came to light, officials conducted an inquiry and dismissed Laxmi Bai from her post. An FIR was filed against Kushwaha for cheating under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Police continue to investigate the case.
