The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Raigad, and the ghat regions of Pune and Satara, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 16 hours. Mumbai remains under an orange alert after persistent downpours disrupted transportation and submerged several low-lying areas on Monday.
According to officials, rain-related incidents across Maharashtra since June 1 have claimed 18 lives and injured 65 people. The IMD has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across the Konkan region and parts of Vidarbha through Tuesday morning.
Mumbai recorded 95 mm of rainfall in the city, while the eastern and western suburbs received 58 mm and 75 mm respectively. A high tide of 4.21 metres is expected at 3:31 pm, further raising concerns over urban flooding.
Flights and suburban trains experienced significant delays. Air India and IndiGo both issued advisories warning passengers of operational disruptions at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Mumbai Metro briefly halted service due to fallen debris, though services later resumed.
In the Konkan belt, heavy rains have led to rising river levels, inundating several villages and towns along the banks. The IMD has also placed Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and several Vidarbha districts like Nagpur and Gondia under an orange alert. The department clarified that a red alert calls for immediate action by authorities, while an orange alert urges preparedness. With monsoon activity intensifying, state officials are on high alert to mitigate flood risks and ensure public safety amid the relentless rainfall.
