Shillong
The Meghalaya government on Thursday honoured a tourist guide and 35 others for helping police trace the body of Raja Raghuvanshi, who was allegedly murdered by his wife Sonam and her four accomplices during their honeymoon. State Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh awarded cash prizes worth Rs 5.4 lakh to Albert Pde, a local guide, and others including mountaineers and travel facilitators who supported the investigation.
Raghuvanshi and Sonam had gone missing on May 23 while holidaying in Sohra, East Khasi Hills. His body was recovered from a deep gorge on June 2. Pde informed police he had seen the couple with three men on the same day and later helped identify a suspect from police photos.
Lyngdoh praised the locals' support and assured that Meghalaya remains safe for tourists. He added that the government will install CCTV cameras at key tourist spots. Sonam was arrested in Ghazipur, while her aides were caught in Indore.
