Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on Sunday, submitting his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhawan, marking the end of his tenure. Singh’s decision comes nearly two years after violent clashes erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The violence followed a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) in May 2023, following a directive from the Manipur High Court regarding the Meitei community’s potential inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes list.
Singh, accompanied by BJP President A Sharda and 19 MLAs, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Manipur. In his resignation letter, Singh acknowledged the central government’s timely interventions and support for various developmental projects. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining Manipur’s territorial integrity, tackling illegal immigration, and intensifying efforts against drugs and terrorism.
Biren Singh, who took office in 2022 following the NDA alliance’s strong electoral victory, leaves behind a significant legacy in the state’s governance. His resignation opens the door to potential changes in the state’s leadership amidst ongoing challenges. The BJP’s next steps in selecting a new chief minister will likely follow extensive deliberations at the central leadership level.
