Low-income workers, vendor in UP get crore-worth I-T notices
Aligarh
Several low-income workers in Uttar Pradesh have been hit with massive income tax notices, revealing a shocking case of identity theft. Karan Kumar, a contractual worker earning ₹15,000 per month, received a notice demanding ₹33.88 crore in taxes. Similarly, Mohit Kumar, who earns just ₹8,500 per month, was served a notice for ₹3.87 crore, while juice vendor Raees Ahmad, making ₹500-600 per day, was asked to pay ₹7.79 crore.
These workers, who do not even qualify for income tax payments, were stunned by the notices issued in March. Investigations revealed that fraudulent business entities misused their Aadhaar and PAN details for large-scale transactions.
Karan Kumar learned that Mahaveer Enterprises, a company dealing in petroleum and steel goods in Delhi, had used his identity for transactions. He filed a police complaint at Chandaus police station, where an investigation is underway.
Mohit Kumar’s employer consulted a GST lawyer, who discovered that a firm named MK Traders had been conducting business under Mohit’s identity since 2020. Meanwhile, Raees Ahmad was left shocked after receiving his notice, with tax officials stating that the matter originated in Delhi, limiting local intervention.
A senior tax lawyer in Aligarh described these cases as large-scale digital fraud, emphasizing the risks of identity theft and misuse of digital identification systems. The affected workers are now seeking legal recourse to clear their names.
