The Kannur town police have registered a case against two women convicts for allegedly assaulting a Nigerian inmate at the women’s prison and correctional home three days ago.

One of the accused is Sherin, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of her father-in-law, Cheriyanad Bhaskara Karanavar. The case was filed based on a complaint by prisoner Kane Simpou Julie (33), who claimed that Sherin pushed her while she was fetching water. Another inmate, Shabna, allegedly assaulted and verbally abused her on February 24.

The FIR was registered on Wednesday under sections 296 (obscene acts) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Sherin was recently in the spotlight after the Kerala government recommended an early release, a move that sparked widespread criticism. She was sentenced to life in 2010 along with three others.
