Kamal Haasan takes Rajya Sabha oath in Tamil
New Delhi
Veteran actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan was officially sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP on Friday. He took his oath in Tamil, earning loud applause from fellow MPs. Speaking to reporters afterward, Haasan said he felt proud and honoured to be part of national politics.
This is Haasan’s first role in Parliament and marks a key milestone in his political career. His nomination was supported by the DMK-led alliance, fulfilling a promise made for MNM’s support during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He filed his nomination on June 6, joined by Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, and leaders from Congress, VCK, and MDMK.
With 158 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the DMK-led INDIA bloc was set to win four of six Rajya Sabha seats. On June 12, Haasan and five others were elected unopposed. MNM had not contested the 2024 elections.
