Justice Varma probe: Fire origin question unanswered

Justice Varma inquiry: Does cash presence alone prove guilt

After the three-member judicial probe panel submitted its report on the March 14 fire incident at Justice Yashwant Varma’s official residence in New Delhi, key questions remain unanswered—especially about how the fire started, sources say. The panel was set up by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to investigate the fire and the burnt cash found at Justice Varma’s residence at 30 Tughlak Crescent.

However, sources close to the matter say the cause of the fire was not thoroughly examined during the inquiry. Legal experts have pointed out that the origin and nature of the fire, which led to the discovery of cash, were not investigated as deeply as expected in such a sensitive case. Justice Varma reportedly trusted the judicial process and expected the probe to include the fire’s cause, especially since early reports suggested the possibility of arson.

Surprisingly, the report mentions that the responsibility to initiate a fire investigation was on the judge himself. Although fire department officials were asked to give statements, none were questioned specifically about whether an investigation into the fire’s cause had taken place. This missed chance leaves uncertainty about whether the fire was accidental, deliberate, or suspicious.

Justice Varma stayed cooperative throughout and urged the inquiry to consider all facts, including the fire’s cause and its link to the burnt cash. While the panel’s work is respected, some legal voices believe a clearer investigation into the fire would have made the findings more complete.

The three-judge panel’s report on the March 14 incident at Justice Yashwant Varma’s residence noted cash was found during the fire. However, sources say no clear proof links Justice Varma or his family to the cash. The panel’s idea of implied responsibility—assuming knowledge based on location—has raised concerns about fairness and proper investigation.
