A video clip allegedly filmed by a doctor inside the labour room and operation theatre of a government maternity hospital in Srinagar has sparked public outrage, prompting health authorities to order an investigation on Thursday.

The clip, now viral on social media, shows the doctor casually walking through sensitive hospital areas while a surgery was underway. The video has raised concerns about the patient’s right to privacy and medical ethics.

Members of the public and doctors alike criticized the filming. Many said the doctor’s actions violated ethical standards and showed a lack of respect for patient confidentiality.

The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, which oversees the maternity hospital, has launched a probe and demanded a report within 24 hours. Officials stated that the doctor’s behavior could breach the Medical Council of India’s ethical guidelines and might also be punishable under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

“The act of recording and sharing visuals from a private medical procedure is a serious violation,” a hospital official said.

This incident follows another controversy just a week earlier at SMHS Hospital, where doctors allegedly manhandled a female journalist. That episode led to a strike after Health Minister Sakina Itoo ordered mass transfers of overstaying doctors to improve medical services.

There are also reports that authorities are considering assigning senior doctors during night shifts at key hospitals in Srinagar to improve patient care and doctor relations.

The viral video incident has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of ethical conduct and better oversight in government hospitals, especially in sensitive areas like operation theatres and maternity wards.
