Jadavpur University acting VC removed by Bengal Governor Bose
Kolkata
West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose has removed Jadavpur University’s officiating Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, with immediate effect, just days before his scheduled retirement on March 31, the Raj Bhavan announced.
Gupta, appointed by Bose in his capacity as the university chancellor, had been serving as the acting VC. On March 27, the Governor’s secretariat issued a statement revoking the authorization granted to Gupta on April 20, 2024, to perform the duties of the Vice-Chancellor. The order, effective immediately, was also sent to the university registrar for necessary action.
When asked about Gupta’s possible reappointment or the appointment of a new VC based on search committee recommendations, Bose had earlier remarked, You will see whether he retires or re-enters. We will decide at the right moment. The university has lacked a permanent VC for over a year and a half since former VC Suranjan Das completed his tenure.
Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) general secretary Partha Pratim Roy expressed concern over the prolonged uncertainty, urging the Governor to resolve the issue, as the absence of a permanent VC is disrupting administrative and academic activities.
Meanwhile, Manojit Mondal, an office-bearer of the TMC-backed West Bengal College and University Professors’ Association (WBCUPA), criticized Bose’s decision, alleging inconsistency, as interim VCs in other state universities have continued despite their terms expiring.
