Indrayani Bridge collapse traps 15 people
Pune
A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday when an iron bridge spanning the Indrayani River near Kundamala village, close to Pune, collapsed, leaving 10 to 15 people feared trapped. The Pimpri-Chinchwad police confirmed that rescue efforts are underway and that at least one individual has been swept away by the river’s strong currents.
The collapse occurred suddenly, catching pedestrians and possibly a few two-wheelers mid-crossing. Preliminary visuals showed mangled steel beams and parts of the bridge submerged in the swollen river, which has been witnessing a strong flow due to recent rains.
Local residents and emergency teams rushed to the site within minutes. As of the latest update, five to six people have been successfully rescued and taken to nearby hospitals. However, with several individuals still unaccounted for, the rescue operation continues with urgency.
District authorities have deployed teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and fire and emergency services to search the riverbank and submerged sections of the bridge. Boats and divers have also been pressed into service to aid the efforts.
Officials are still assessing the cause of the structural failure, though initial reports suggest corrosion and lack of maintenance may have played a role. An official inquiry has been launched to determine the exact reason for the collapse.
The district administration has appealed to the public to stay away from the site and cooperate with emergency personnel. More details are expected as the situation develops and rescue operations continue through the night.
