India's GST collection hits ₹22.08 lakh crore, up 9.4%
New Delhi
India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection for the financial year 2024–25 reached a record Rs 22.08 lakh crore, showing a 9.4% rise compared to the previous year, the government announced on Monday. The average monthly collection stood at Rs 1.84 lakh crore, more than double the Rs 95,000 crore monthly average recorded in 2020–21.
This consistent growth reflects better tax compliance and strong economic activity. In May 2025 alone, GST collection surged by 16.4% to over Rs 2.01 lakh crore. Domestic transactions contributed Rs 1.50 lakh crore, up 13.7%, while GST from imports rose by 25.2% to Rs 51,266 crore.
The May 2025 breakdown includes Rs 35,434 crore as Central GST, Rs 43,902 crore as State GST, and Rs 1.09 lakh crore as Integrated GST (IGST), which is shared between the Centre and states.
As of April 30, more than 1.51 crore active GST registrations exist in the country. These include over 1.32 crore regular taxpayers, 14.86 lakh composition taxpayers, and 3.71 lakh TDS-registered taxpayers.
India will mark eight years of GST implementation on July 1. Launched in 2017, the GST system replaced multiple indirect taxes with a single, unified tax framework. It stands as one of the country’s most significant tax reforms, simplifying the tax structure and improving revenue collection.
