India, US discuss multi-sector trade agreement
New Delhi
Representatives from India’s Commerce Ministry and the US Trade Representative’s Office met in Washington from April 23–25 to discuss progress on the first phase of a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement, aiming for completion by Fall 2025. According to the Commerce Ministry, both sides explored early mutual benefits and mapped out further talks. While previous meetings took place virtually, in-person sector-specific discussions are planned from the end of May.
These talks build on earlier discussions held in New Delhi last month and covered a broad range of tariff and non-tariff issues. The engagement reflects both nations' shared goal of deepening economic ties and boosting supply chain integration under the framework set by the Leaders’ Statement in February 2025.
The trade discussions are part of a wider bilateral effort to create a more balanced trade relationship. On March 29, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau also held talks. They focused on reducing trade barriers, enhancing cooperation in defense and technology, and addressing illegal immigration to the US.
The US State Department appreciated India’s support in curbing illegal immigration and reaffirmed joint efforts to improve security and economic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. Both sides expressed commitment to building a fair and lasting partnership through dialogue, economic cooperation, and strategic alignment across various sectors.
