India continues to be the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasting a growth rate of over 6 percent for the next two years, according to their latest report released on April 22. This makes India the only major economy expected to maintain such robust growth, especially as the IMF has revised down growth projections for over 120 countries.

IMF Chief Economist Gita Gopinath mentioned that global growth is expected to slow to 2.8 percent in 2025, a significant decrease from earlier projections, with 86 percent of the global GDP facing downward revisions. She stressed the importance of clearer trade policies and structural reforms to restore global growth momentum.

India’s economy is projected to grow at 6.2 percent in 2025 and 6.3 percent in 2026, far ahead of China’s forecasted growth of 4 percent and 4.6 percent during the same period. In contrast, the US is expected to experience slower growth, with its GDP increasing by only 1.8 percent in 2025, further dropping to 1.7 percent in 2026.

The Euro Area is also facing a slowdown, with growth expected to hit just 0.8 percent in 2025, and Germany is predicted to have zero growth in 2025. Meanwhile, Japan’s growth is expected to stagnate due to global trade disruptions.

The IMF report attributes the slowdown to the rise in global tariffs and trade uncertainty, which are anticipated to significantly impact global growth in the near term.
