India and China are gradually working towards normalizing their ties, with recent diplomatic engagements paving the way for improved relations. Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong stated on Tuesday that the relationship between the two nations remains one of the most significant globally.

Key Diplomatic Engagements

The Special Representatives (SR) dialogue and the Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister talks have played a crucial role in addressing boundary issues. The 23rd SR meeting in December saw India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi engage in discussions. Later, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri traveled to Beijing to meet his counterpart Sun Weidong. These talks resulted in common understandings on border matters and strengthened cooperation between the two nations.

Opportunities for Collaboration

Ambassador Xu stated that these dialogues provide a fresh opportunity for rebuilding ties and fostering youth exchanges. He emphasized the importance of mutual respect, understanding core interests, and promoting engagement across various sectors. While he refrained from specifying details, he reiterated that a stable relationship benefits both nations and aligns with global expectations.

Marking 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations

As 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of India-China diplomatic relations, Xu highlighted the significance of this milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The disengagement process in eastern Ladakh concluded last year, addressing key friction points. Following this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping met in Kazan, agreeing to revive diplomatic channels. India maintains that peaceful borders are essential for fully restoring normal ties with China.
