India and Angola emphasized the urgent need for United Nations (UN) reforms to align with current global realities. Both countries expressed their shared interest in transforming international governance structures. At a press conference following Angolan President Joao Lourenco's state visit on Saturday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary (Economic Relations) Dammu Ravi highlighted Lourenco’s support for India’s growing international role, especially within the UN system.

Lourenco's comments echoed India's long-standing demand for reforms in global institutions, including securing a permanent seat at the UN Security Council. Angola, currently chairing the African Union, expressed its alignment with amplifying the voices of African and developing nations, particularly in the context of the Global South.

Ravi also pointed out the importance Angola places on India’s rising international influence, seeing India and Africa as pivotal players in shaping a more balanced global order. Both nations are committed to a stronger, dynamic role in the Global South, with Africa at its core.

During the visit, the two countries discussed the 4th India-Africa Forum Summit. Angola, as AU chair, committed to coordinating with African leaders to finalize the summit dates. Additionally, India and Angola deepened bilateral ties by signing three Memorandums of Understanding in agriculture, culture, and traditional medicine. Angola also took steps to join the International Solar Alliance, set to become its 123rd member.

Ravi also highlighted the active Indian diaspora in Angola, contributing significantly to sectors such as trade, retail, and professional services, further strengthening ties between the nations.

India is focused on strengthening ties with Africa by leveraging its own strengths, rather than competing with China, said Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations) at the Ministry of External Affairs, following Angolan President Joao Lourenco's visit. Ravi highlighted India's capabilities in areas like skills training, low-cost solutions, and people-centered development, which are valued by African nations. India aims to build on these strengths, particularly in infrastructure and capacity-building partnerships. During the visit, India approved a USD 200 million defence Line of Credit for Angola and signed multiple agreements in sectors like agriculture, culture, and traditional medicine. Both countries also reaffirmed their support for UN reform.
