Illegal mazar at Doon Hospital campus demolished
Dehradun
An illegally built 'mazar' on the campus of Government Doon Medical College and Hospital was demolished on Friday night by the city administration. The operation, carried out with two JCB excavators, was overseen by police after securing the area. The action followed a complaint lodged on the CM Helpline by a Rishikesh resident, questioning the legality of the structure. Official records confirmed its illegal status.
The mazar, which had been on the hospital campus for decades, had become a source of inconvenience, particularly due to the already limited space at the hospital. Patients and their families were encouraged by the caretaker to pray for healing, leading to further complaints. The hospital administration, troubled by its presence, had requested the state government to remove it.
This demolition is part of an ongoing state-wide drive against illegal mazars. In response, Congress leader Suryakant Dhasmana criticized the overnight demolition, accusing the government of spreading hatred under the guise of legality. He also pointed out that the Waqf Board, responsible for overseeing such structures, should decide on its legality, as the mazar had been established before Uttarakhand became a state in 2000.
