IIT-Bombay student dies by suicide; police probe underway
Mumbai
A 22-year-old Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-Bombay) student allegedly died by suicide after jumping from his hostel building in the early hours of Saturday. The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m., and the student was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
The deceased has been identified as Rohit Sinha, a fourth-year Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science student from New Delhi. According to Mumbai Police, Sinha allegedly jumped from the terrace while his hostel mate was on a phone call nearby. The reason behind the extreme step is yet to be determined, and an Accidental Death Report has been filed.
This incident comes amid growing concerns over student suicides at India’s premier IIT campuses. In July, IIT-Kharagpur reported two back-to-back deaths: second-year Electrical Engineering student Chandradip Pawar and fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student Ritam Mondal were both found dead in separate hostel incidents, with investigations still ongoing.
Earlier this year, on May 4, Mohammad Asif Qamar, a third-year B.Tech student from Bihar, was found dead in Madan Mohan Malviya Hall, and on April 20, final-year Ocean Engineering student Aniket Walker from Maharashtra was discovered hanging in JC Bose Hall.
Police and institute authorities are investigating Sinha’s death as part of the growing pattern of stress-linked tragedies in India’s top engineering colleges.
