Gujarat to give BPL families subsidised sugar, oil
Gandhinagar
The Gujarat government will distribute additional sugar and edible oil at subsidised rates to over 75 lakh ration card holders, mainly Antyodaya and BPL families, starting early August, said Food and Civil Supplies Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya. This festive relief initiative, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, aims to help underprivileged families celebrate Janmashtami with dignity.
Each eligible family under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and Non-NFSA BPL category will receive one litre of groundnut oil at Rs 100 and one kilogram of sugar — at Rs 22 for BPL families and Rs 15 for Antyodaya cardholders.
Bavaliya mentioned that over 3.18 crore people currently receive monthly essentials like sugar, salt, chana, and tur dal through Gujarat’s public distribution system. In addition to regular supplies, the state implements special festive relief measures during Janmashtami and Diwali.
Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Bhikhusinh Parmar added that, during this distribution, each Antyodaya and BPL family will also receive one kilogram of chana at Rs 30 and tur dal at Rs 50. Moreover, salt will be provided at just Re 1 per kilogram for all eligible ration cardholders.
The August 2025 allocation has already been completed to ensure timely delivery to fair price shops. Parmar said the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to food and nutrition security, aiming for inclusive development by supporting vulnerable families through targeted welfare schemes.
