Encouraged by the success of its pilot program, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to expand its free bus service for school students. The service, which currently helps 373 students from corporation-run schools using four buses, will soon cover more areas and benefit additional children.
Deputy Mayor M. Magesh Kumaar announced the expansion on Thursday. He said the education department has been asked to identify students, especially those from remote and suburban locations, who need transport support. Based on the data collected, more buses will be added, ensuring wider coverage.
Launched by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, the initiative has gained strong support from parents. Each bus has security personnel on board to ensure student safety, making daily commutes worry-free for families.
Deputy Mayor Kumaar said the scheme is restoring public confidence in corporation schools and helping bridge the gap with private institutions. This year, over 22,000 new students have enrolled in GCC schools — a significant increase linked to the service and other reforms.
The program, implemented at a cost of ₹1.11 crore, will also support educational trips, sports meets, and inter-school competitions. The Corporation stressed that safe and equal access to education is its top priority.
With further expansion in progress, GCC hopes to eliminate transport challenges for underprivileged students and promote consistent school attendance, reinforcing its commitment to improving public education in Chennai.
