In a separate development, the Central Anti-Drugs Squad (CADS) of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) destroyed illegal drugs worth ₹4.29 crore on Monday during a public event attended by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma. The seized items, collected between March 15 and June, included heroin, methamphetamine tablets, marijuana, codeine-based cough syrup, and illegal liquor. CADS also arrested 809 people involved in drug-related crimes during this period.
The YMA, one of Mizoram’s most influential civil society groups, has been actively assisting authorities in fighting drug abuse and trafficking. Mizoram’s geographical location makes it vulnerable to cross-border smuggling, especially from Myanmar’s Chin State. The state shares a 510-km border with Myanmar and a 318-km border with Bangladesh, much of which remains unfenced. This has made Mizoram a key transit route for smuggled drugs and other contraband, putting added pressure on law enforcement and local communities.
