DGCA may reassess pilot fitness framework and related aspects
New Delhi
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is considering a review of pilot fitness guidelines and the medical emergency response system at airports, according to a senior official. This comes after the tragic death of an Air India Express pilot earlier this month, who passed away due to a medical condition shortly after operating a flight from Srinagar to Delhi. The pilot, feeling unwell after landing, was rushed to a hospital but died there.
In response, the DGCA is likely to assess the current framework for pilot fitness, the emergency procedures at airports, and other related protocols. The Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) will be revisited to ensure proper safety measures.
The Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA) recently highlighted concerns about pilot welfare, mental health, and working conditions, stressing the need for transparent regulations, better rest periods, and comprehensive mental health support within airlines. New duty and rest hour norms are set to begin on July 1.
