Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced on Thursday that the government is considering hiring an additional agency to speed up the waste processing and remove the large garbage piles in the city. He confidently stated that the garbage mounds in Delhi would disappear within five years, much like dinosaurs.

During his visit to the Ghazipur landfill, Sirsa emphasized that the government is taking urgent action to clear the long-standing waste and eliminate the huge piles that resemble mountains. The minister assured that the issue would be addressed on a war footing.

Out of the 70 lakh metric tonnes of waste accumulated at the landfill, Sirsa revealed that 14-15 lakh tonnes have already been processed. He highlighted that the biomining process, which involves extracting usable material from the waste, is now progressing at a faster pace. In the coming six months, the goal is to process around 7,000 to 8,000 metric tonnes of waste daily.

Sirsa also instructed officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to ensure that the new contractor processes at least 8,000 metric tonnes of waste daily within the next four to five months. He warned that penalties would be imposed if this target is not met.

The Delhi government is looking into the possibility of bringing in another agency to further accelerate the waste processing. Sirsa mentioned that the progress is being tracked daily through a dashboard at the secretariat, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a cleaner environment. He stressed that they are committed to completing the cleanup process within five to six years, ensuring rapid progress in the coming months.
