Delhi LG orders crackdown on fake Aadhaar cards
New Delhi
The Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat has instructed the city government to stop using third-party vendors for Aadhaar enrolment and updates. Instead, only staff from the Registrar’s office will handle these tasks. This move follows reports that many illegal immigrants have obtained Aadhaar cards using fake documents.
In a letter to Chief Secretary Dharmendra, the LG’s office stressed the national security risks involved and warned that these fake Aadhaar cards allow illegal immigrants to misuse government welfare schemes and affect local job opportunities. Although the letter does not mention specific communities, it comes amid ongoing police efforts to deport Bangladeshis and Rohingyas living in Delhi.
The LG’s office has given a two-month deadline to shift to an in-house Aadhaar enrolment model and has asked for a detailed list of all enrolment centres by July 15. It has also directed strict enforcement of UIDAI’s 2016 regulations on Aadhaar enrolment and updates.
Monthly audits of all Aadhaar centres have been mandated to prevent misuse. The LG’s office said it had found multiple cases of Aadhaar cards being wrongly issued to illegal migrants, posing a serious security concern. The city government has been asked to improve supervision and ensure full compliance with UIDAI guidelines.
